Boulder Requires Shake Shingle Replacement

Boulder Requires Shake Shingle Replacement

Boulder is requiring that on Jan 1, 2014 all wood shake shingles will be prohibited from use as a roofing material in the City of Boulder .

If you live within the city limits of Boulder, this could effect you.  All wood roofs in the city limits of Boulder have to be replaced by the January 1, 2014.  This ordinance has actually been in effect since 1994, but now the City is getting serious.  The City of Boulder currently has a list of homes that have wood roofs on them.  The definition of a wood roof, according to the city, is anything with wood shakes, wood shingles, wood composite or any other form of wood roof covering that contains at least 50 percent wood by volume.  Come January 1st, if these homes have not replaced their roofs with tile, asphalt shingles, metal, or synthetic “wood” shake, they are in violation of code compliance.  This violation could result in a fine of up to $1000.00 per day!  The City Council is still discussing the process of how the fining will work, but it will not be cheap. The City of Boulder is not providing any sort of financial assistance to these home owners, but many roofing companies in Boulder are providing more affordable payment plans.   So if you live within the City and have a wood roof, start making phone calls to get it replaced before the winter months come.
